Mr. Filkow studied law at the University of Toronto and was called to the Bar of British Columbia in 1994 and the Bar of Manitoba in 1999. He is a member of the Canadian Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Criminal Defence Advocacy Society, and the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law. He also serves on the Board of Governors of the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia (TLABC).
A senior and respected trial lawyer, Mr. Filkow is widely regarded for his exceptional negotiation skills, strategic insight, and successful record representing thousands of clients in criminal and driving law matters. He has also acted as a Crown prosecutor, providing him with additional insight and knowledge from the Crown perspective. Mr. Filkow is regularly consulted by fellow lawyers for his depth of knowledge and trusted legal advice.
A leader in the legal community, Mr. Filkow has chaired several province-wide criminal law conferences, covering topics including sexual and domestic assault cases, expert evidence, video testimony, and drinking-and-driving laws. These conferences have brought together judges, defence lawyers, Crown counsel, and law students for substantive discussions on modern criminal practice.
He is the author of numerous articles on criminal law and is frequently invited by Continuing Legal Education and the media to share his expertise and commentary.
