Mr. Filkow developed a highly successful criminal and court practice over 20 years before founding Filkow Law in 2014.

Early in his career Mr. Filkow was trained and mentored by some of Canada’s leading criminal and litigation lawyers, laying the foundation for his successful criminal and court practice spanning two decades. In that period Mr. Filkow served as a partner at Michaels and Filkow, a well known and well respected boutique criminal law firm.

Having built an outstanding reputation based on an impressive track record of results for his clients across British Columbia as well as in other provinces, Mr. Filkow determined to open his own firm with a group of associates with offices in Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey and Kelowna, BC. Filkow Law clients now benefit from Mr. Filkow’s deep and broad knowledge of criminal law, driving law and the criminal justice system.

Mr. Filkow studied Law at the University of Toronto and was called to the Bars of British Columbia (1994) and Manitoba (1999). He is a member of the Canadian and American Bar Associations, the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia and the International Society for the Reform of Criminal Law. Mr. Filkow also serves on the Board of Governors of the Trial Lawyers Association of British Columbia. The author of many articles on issues in criminal law, he is frequently engaged by Continuing Legal Education and by the media for his views on criminal law and driving issues.

Michael Thain

Michael completed his undergraduate education at Simon Fraser University, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology. He graduated from the University of Victoria Faculty of Law in 2014. During law school, Michael assisted with a Pro Bono Students Canada project dealing with immigration law issues.

Michael joined the firm in 2014 and completed his articles with Kevin Filkow, developing strong courtroom, negotiation and client service skills.

Michael brings a unique set of skills from his work experience. He worked for the Canada Border Services Agency for four years, enforcing Customs and Immigration legislation. Michael now uses that experience to assist his clients with criminal, immigration and customs issues. Michael has been involved in several smuggling cases with excellent outcomes for his clients.

Michael’s main area of practice is in criminal defence and he has appeared in courts throughout British Columbia. He has developed excellent professional relationships with the police, Crown and other parties in the justice system to ensure his clients get the best outcome. Michael’s main areas of practice are criminal litigation, plaintiff personal injury litigation, and driving and immigration and customs matters.



Mike Jones

Mike joined Filkow Law in 2017. His practice focuses on personal injury law, civil litigation and criminal defence. He was called to both the Ontario and British Columbia Bars in 2015.

Before joining Filkow Law, Mike worked at a civil litigation firm where he represented his clients on a variety of personal injury, wills and estates, and commercial litigation matters. Prior to that he articled at a criminal defence firm in Toronto where he assisted senior counsel on complex trials. Mike has extensive litigation experience and has successfully appeared before administrative, tribunals and courts in both Ontario and British Columbia.

Mike is skilled at helping his clients manage situations where emotions can run high. He makes it a priority to assist clients to assess their situations in a calm, objective way. Mike’s personal approach ensures that his clients get advice tailored to their unique situation in order to get the best results.

Originally from Oakville, Ontario, Mike studied history and religious studies at the University of Waterloo and the University of Toronto before moving to Vancouver to pursue a legal career. He earned a J.D from the University of British Columbia.

Mike has worked and volunteered for organizations such as the Ontario Chamber of Commerce, Big Brothers | Big Sisters, Prostate Cancer Canada and the Innocence Project.

Crown Prosecutor

Ms. Halliburn

Ms. Halliburn comes to us from Thompson, Manitoba, the crime capital of Canada, where she spent the last three years as a Crown Prosecutor.

She specialized in the prosecution of child abuse matters and serious violent crime. Accordingly, Ms. Halliburn knows exactly how the Crown thinks when they are prosecuting violent crime, particularly sexual assault, child abuse and pornography, and young offenders.

With her extensive experience in negotiations, bail and sentencing hearings, and trials at all court levels, we are excited to have her bring her unique perspective to the firm.


Articling Student

Dawid Cieloszczyk

Dawid Cieloszczyk joined Filkow Law as an articling student in 2016. Dawid completed his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at the University of Western Ontario in London. Dawid then moved to Vancouver and completed his Juris Doctor at Peter A. Allard School of Law at the University of British Columbia in 2016.

During law school, Dawid was very involved in the Law Students’ Legal Advice Program. He worked there as a summer student and volunteered throughout law school, gaining valuable court experience. Prior to joining Filkow Law, Dawid summered at Stikeman Elliott, a national business law firm, focusing on commercial litigation and corporate transactions. Dawid brings his criminal law and civil litigation advocacy skills to the firm.

Dawid’s primary legal interests include criminal law, and personal injury law.


Legal Assistant

Komal Gill

Komal started at FIlkow Law as a legal assistant in August, 2016, after working at the firm as a practicum student. Her insight and passion about the law makes her an invaluable part of the Filkow Law team.

Komal graduated with a Bachelors degree in Criminology and Legal Studies certificate from Simon Fraser University in August, 2016. She is passionate about working in law, and after graduation continued on as a vice-president of the SFU Pre-Law Society. She has been invaluable in planning large fundraising events and speaking to students on behalf of the Society. Komal has also been volunteering with the RCMP for the past five years and organized and leads her own block watch program in her neighbourhood.

Komal enjoys assisting our clients and providing excellent service. She has a background in customer service and takes the time to ensure that everyone that comes into our office has their concerns met. She takes pride in helping get the best results for our clients.

Komal speaks Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu.


Legal Assistant

Lindsay Lloyd

Lindsey Lloyd joined Filkow Law as a Legal Assistant in 2017. Prior to joining our team she worked as with Legal Aid where she helped guide a variety of clients through the legal system. Now, her areas of interest are criminal law, driving offences and personal injury.

Lindsey has a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph, where she double majored in sociology and criminal justice and public policy. She has volunteered around the world and recently returned from a trip to south-east Asia where she worked with children in Vietnam and at an elephant sanctuary in Thailand.

Lindsey is passionate about helping others and provides outstanding service and support to both our lawyers and clients.
